The Flip-down Handcontrol Mount

Originator.......Bruce Barney

THE Problem- Powerchairs have handcontrols mounted on their front edge which prevents the driver from getting close to counters or tables. Existing devices are expensive and only marginally effective. Handcontrol mounting tubes and brackets may be used to invert the handcontrol, but this requires dexterity, time, mechanical aptitude, and proprioception(because the mechanism is out of sight).

The Solution-- A bracket is built onto the tubing of the desk notch on the side of the chair with a platform on top. A door hinge between this and an adapter plate of plywood which holds the handcontrol allows the control to flip down to fit under counters. The plate is sprung slightly by soft rubber washers or a bullet catch and is retained by an elbow catch which allows one-hand use within view of the driver. The mount also brings the control inboard to reduce the number of door jamb collisions.
