THE PROBLEM:  After realization that a finger abnormality was the cause of  the client's inability to perform to classroom typing  expectations, thus not being able to complete the last year of a college course on court recording, DesignAbility was asked to customize a stenograph shorthand machine's keys. As the client's small finger on the right hand is approximately ½" shorter than normal and after repeated medical operations, the possibility of continuation of the college course and the ability to reach not only the keys but the course requirements of 180 words per minute on the shorthand machine was required.

THE SOLUTION:  The stenograph shorthand machine is similar to a manual typewriter in its machinery but has a different keyboard arrangement. The small finger of the right hand operates four keys. These four key arms were cut and extended to be able to be reached by the shorter small finger.
