The Problem:   The client is a paraplegic with limited use of his hands, and wanted a standing frame to improve circulation and general conditioning, fight spasticity, and to eliminate daily time-consuming trips to the rehabilitation clinic. He required back and side support.

The Solution:   A standalone standing frame with seat and back was designed and fabricated for regular use in his apartment. Features incorporated in the stander include:

- electric lifting and lowering between standing and sitting positions

- emergency release to allow controlled lowering in case of power outage (client lives alone)

- back and side support during lifting

- powered variable-angle lifting of feet to stretch ankle tendons and reduce spasticity

- an ample transparent table top and power bar for lamp, computer, etc.

The patient side-transfers from his wheelchair to the lifter seat, lowers the arm rest, lowers the knee pads into restraining position, then pushes a rocker switch to start the lifting winch, and raise himself to the standing position. While in the standing position he can rotate his feet to extend his ankle tendons and reduce spasticity. In case of a power outage, patient pulls upward on the left arm rest to release the chair from the hoist rope and the chair lowers to the sitting position. When power is available, the winch is reversed to re-position the rope to the starting position and the power cleat is easily engaged.
