THE PROBLEM: The patient has Multiple Sclerosis and wanted a device to get into the standing position conveniently from her wheelchair to help improve condition of her leg muscles, improve circulation, and fight spasticity through excercise. There was limited room available in her home for a separate standing unit with its own frame.
THE SOLUTION: A stander was designed and fabricated for use in the hallway. The 2 horizontal bars at knee and waist level are removable from the wall mounts to allow normal traffic in the hallway. To use, the patient approaches in her wheelchair with a 'sling' already wrapped around her waist and hips, pushes her knees against the knee pads, connects the stander ropes to the sling and pulls on the rope from a ceiling mounted pulley. The unit can also be adapted to use an electric winch mounted on the floor that has its own control pendant (no ceiling-mounted pulleys required). The 2 bars and winch can be stored in a closet. The unit can also be adapted to a separate standing frame that is moveable/portable.
