THE PROBLEM: Sixty-nine year old Ida Edwards is a member of the Cowichan band, famous for their hand knit siwash sweaters. I used to spend hours watching my grandmother spinning wool. I've been spinning wool since I was then years old. I was thinking if I could do it again I'd be in seventh heaven. Ida injured herself ten years ago and has limited use of her legs and hands. She is unable to use a standard spinning wheel which is foot powered and felt that a motorized wheel would allow her to once again do the thing she loves. And maybe I could even make a little money.
THE SOLUTION: Tetra volunteer Michael Ciacci got a description from Ida and a diagram from the library. He went to a weavers and spinners fair where he made a connection that led him to someone who had pieces from an Indian Spinner. He fabricated the rest and went to several flea markets to find a used sewing machine motor. Last we heard Ida was busily working on a toque (wool cap) for Michael. I don't know how to thank everyone enough. To be able to do something on my own again is wonderful.
