THE PROBLEM: Nicole has cerebral palsy and has an involuntary tendency to throw herself backwards and forwards in her wheel chair to such an extent that several times she broke parts of her chair. TAD Tasmania was asked if it would be possible to make a special rocking chair for her which would take the shock of her motion. After looking at the problem it was decided instead to convert the wheel chair into a rocking chair..
THE SOLUTION: Various possible solutions were looked at ranging from a springloaded platform to a swinging frame rather like a child's rocking horse. In the end, a simple device was built using 6mm thick aluminium plate rolled to a suitable curve onto which the chair could be rolled and tied down. The device weighs only a few kg and is easy to stow when not on use.
