The Phone Holster

THE PROBLEM:  The client was concerned that she did not always remember to take her cordless phone with her when moving about in her wheelchair. Should she tip over, or slide off, she might not be able to call for assistance.

THE SOLUTION: A phone holster, permanently, and conveniently, attached to the wheelchair frame would ensure that the phone was always within reach. One less worry about safety.

The ease with which the plastic siding material can be moulded is quite exciting for all kinds of applications. A heat gun, on low setting allows the material to be bent to shape over wooden forms. The plastic retains its strength and flexibility, allowing the holster to adjust to the phone and to clip it in position.. Post construction adjustments are easily carried out with the heat gun.

The pine mounting block was shaped to receive the holster on one side and the tubular wheelchair frame on the other. The template pictured shows the position of the two screws which fix the clip to the pine. The photo of the phone in the clip shows thin pine pieces have been laminated on the edge of the block to prevent it from splitting when screws for the reward clamps (bottom one visible) are secured.

This template is applied to ordinary plastic siding material and the outline cut. Inside lines can be drawn in pencil and used as a rough guide for bending. After the clip is bent up, the lines are easily removed with Vim or similar product.
