THE PROBLEM: Home built head pointer weight caused wearer fatigue due to the amount of cantilevered weight of the 1/4" solid aluminum rod and the bulky clamp mechanism and wad of tape to hold a pen in place.
THE SOLUTION: I acquired free "dead" Easton aluminum arrow shafts from a local archery range and machined fittings for the hinge end and to allow clamping a wide range of pens, brushes or pointer tips to be used with minimum cantilevered weight. Arrow tubing comes in several outside diameters and weights ranging from 0.2 to 0.33 ounces per foot. Solid aluminum rod 1/4" diameter weighs about 1 full ounce per foot. Composite arrows are at the lighter end of the range at 0.2 ounces per foot and hunting arrows about 0.33 ounces per foot.
