THE PROBLEM: Many people, confined to a wheelchair, find it very difficult to get cardiovascular exercise, especially in winter. Beyond the obvious benefits anyone derives from a heart-lung workout on a regular basis, it is particularly important to the wheelchair-bound in providing increased bloodflow to prevent pressure sores. .
THE SOLUTION: This device can be made from bicycle or stationary exercise bike parts. The pedal mechanism is attached to a light, strong frame that slides into the tubes on the wheelchair that normally hold the tray. The pedals are replaced by using their center tube only and covering them with a soft sponge. A tachometer/speedometer is an important added feature that provides feedback on time and distance goals.
