THE PROBLEM: Client with limited mobility living on own needed a remote mechanism to lock/unlock doors in home to provide security, yet allow care aides entry.
THE SOLUTION: Although commercial door locks exist, they were too expensive for this application. An affordable solution was found by mating a door-lock solenoid from junked car to a standard dead-bolt. Power was provided by standard 12 VDC power adapter. Power was connected through a momentary contact, center-off, double throw switch that was wired to reverse the power polarity as it was moved up/down. This operated the solenoid in both directions. The switch was placed in box that was placed beside bed. The car-lock solenoid can easily be operated manually if needed.
