THE PROBLEM: Quadraplegics or others unable to use their upper body and arms depend on caregivers for the simple task of drinking a cup of coffee. As each wheelchair is manufactured to different specifications, there is no universal attachment that can hold a coffee cup or juice bottle within reach of the user's mouth enabling them to drink with a straw.
THE SOLUTION: A flexible 'goose-neck' microphone stand with fittings at each end, a machined clamp to suit the wheelchair arm supports, and a piece of black PVC drain collar and some wire, was used to make a cup holder. The collar has a notch cut into the side of it to hold the thermal coffee cup, and a wire cage
was added below to hold most convenient sizes of juice bottles and pop cans. Inside the flexible 'goose-neck' is a stiff piece of fencing wire which allows the
holder to be positioned where it will stay, but is still flexible enough not to causeharm to a user if bumped into or struck accidentally.
