THE PROBLEM: Our son Danny, was growing out of his infant bike carrier seat that was mounted on the rear of my bike. He was clear that the trailers that are towed are for babies. He also wanted to pedal. We tried the trail-a-bike type of bikes as well as a tandem bike but found them too dangerous as Danny has poor trunk support.
THE SOLUTION: We kept coming back to the trail-a-bike idea and delt with the problems one at a time. The biggest problem was balance and the high center of gravity. We replaced the one wheel with two and a wide axle and modified the hitch to allow the towing bike to lean. We used a seat back with 2 seat belts and a soft seat. We also fixed his feet to the pedals with toe straps around the heels so even though he can't walk he can pedal (200km so far). Danny very quickly learned to relax on the bike and then learned to pedal as well. Dan can now go on bike trips with the whole family on rough trail rides as well as on the street.
